Junghans max bill Chronoscope

Max Bill's collaboration with Junghans — begun in 1956 with a kitchen clock — gave rise to one of watchmaking's most enduring design languages. Rooted in the Bauhaus doctrine of form following function, every element on the dial earns its place or is removed. The Chronoscope extends this philosophy into the complexity of a mechanical stopwatch: two subdials at 12 and 6 o'clock create a perfectly weighted composition, while the absence of a small seconds counter at 9 o'clock allows the eye to rest in uninterrupted symmetry. The matte silver dial, luminous Arabic numerals and hands, and the domed sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective coating are all expressions of the same quiet discipline. On the caseback, a transparent Bauhaus motif — fixed by five screws — offers a view of the automatic caliber J880.2 beating beneath.
